These are songs that if I hear them anywhere, I’ll ask ‘what’s this track?’ or note down their lyrics and do a google search when I get back and compulsively loop them round and round. Not in order.
These are songs are mind-altering substances and have charmed and changed me, my dominant emotions and thoughts and have integrated themselves into me. Largely shoe-gaze, instrumental, freak-folk.
These are songs that I want to eat for breakfast and paint the walls of the world with. In short, I am crazy about them. I have blogged about the majority of the songs here.
Tell me if you want a mixtape (customised or not) 🙂
I shall attempt to rate them (max: +++) in this already awesome list. But factors like their freshness index–how long I’ve been listening to that track makes it a little unfair. Some songs which I’ve liked it just as much in the past have also been eliminated because I’ve killed them, so it’s unfair.
1. Joanna Newsom – Emily (+++)
Discovered from: Someone’s lastfm page. He was so obsessed that his top 15 song list was all covered with her songs and he’s a chronic lastfm user and has an obscene number of plays so Joanna Newsom must be some really insane musician. So I had to check her out and I never regretted it. I don’t know where I will be today if I didn’t listen to her! (sounds exaggerated but yeah..) After that, I know how easily addicted to her one can be if one remotely likes her song. But it’s either you hate her or love her.
2. Mum – Green Grass of Tunnel (+++)
Discovered from: Lastfm recommended Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan for me and I discovered upon reading a comment on their page that Kria Brekkan is a vocalist in Mum, a band which I’d always wanted to check out and Youtube’s first search result led to the song.
3. WHY? – Gemini (Birthday Song) (++)
Discovered from: Someone’s lastfm page. Another obsessed person.
4. La Banda Misma – I OSO + II OSO (++-)
Someone’s lastfm page, offering free download. This is probably the band which I’ve listened to with the least scrobbles on lastfm.
5. Dan Deacon – Get Older (++)
Discovered from: Discovered ‘Big Milk’ from ArinCrumley’s vlog. Proceeded months later to search on Youtube for more Deacon songs.
6. Clint Mansell (Soundtrack in ‘The Fountain’) – Together we will live forever (++)
Discovered from: The movie which Jackie recommended– it’s a grand movie, Jackie, thanks-much for the recommendation, if you’re reading this! But I shall not elaborate because 1. I think I need to watch it again to appreciate it more, 2. it will take too long a post for me to start on it 🙂
7. New Order – Ceremony (++)
Discovered from: Someone’s lastfm page. Keep seeing it appear everywhere.
8. Waking Life sountrack (++)
Discovered from: Watched the movie based on an internet recommendation list
9. Moby – Everloving (++)
Discovered from: 0thouartthat0 ‘s Youtube video which featured this song
10. Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes (++)
Discovered from: Someone’s lastfm page
11. Parenthetical Girls – Love Connection II (+-)
Discovered from: ArinCrumley ‘s Foureyedmonster channel production, probably episode 9. I was so charmed with the music and had to listen hard for the lyrics because it’s rather inaudible and the enunciations weren’t too clear.
12. Au Revoir Simone – Sad Song (++)
Discovered from: Finally gained enough momentum to check them out after hearing them featured in Friendly Fires’ ‘Paris’, a song cover request on a Youtube page, a lastfm page.
There are many bands which I love but are consistently good/excellent with slightly more homogeneous (in a good way) tracks so they did not make it here. Examples are, MGMT, Beirut, Andrew Bird, the obvious post-rock instrumental bands, Blonde Redhead, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, etc. Some bands/singer-songwriters on this list have not been thoroughly explored but I love that track enough, so there they are!
